New training supports regulatory post-licensing rules and bridges practitioner proficiency gaps.
The Canadian Securities Institute (CSI) has launched a new Firm Training Program aimed at helping Canadian investment firms meet the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization’s (CIRO) updated proficiency expectations.
The program is designed to align with CIRO’s assessment-based post-registration framework, which came into effect at the beginning of 2026.
Under the new regulatory model, firms are required to provide structured, post-approval training to newly registered investment and registered representatives, to be completed within 90 days of approval. CSI’s program is built around CIRO’s published retail and institutional competency profiles, giving firms a clear, regulator-aligned foundation for developing job-ready skills.
The training follows a two-step structure that begins with an assessment to identify an individual’s strengths and knowledge gaps. Based on those results, targeted learning modules are assigned to address specific areas for development. This approach allows firms to demonstrate a direct link between training activities and improved professional competence, while supporting consistent standards across teams.
“The evolution toward an assessment-based proficiency model represents a meaningful step for the industry,” said recently appointed Head of the Canadian Securities Institute, Anthony Sueaquan. “The new product offering reflects a shared commitment to raising standards and supporting Canada’s financial institutions with professional training that builds lasting expertise, skills and judgement required to effectively serve clients and uphold the integrity of Canada’s financial markets.”
Firms can choose to deliver the program through their own internal learning systems or use CSI’s hosted platform, providing flexibility in how training is implemented and managed. This adaptability is intended to reduce operational complexity while ensuring firms can meet regulatory obligations efficiently.
The program’s launch also reflects broader changes in the professional education landscape. In December 2025, Fitch Learning completed its acquisition of both CSI and Moody’s Analytics Learning Solutions, a move that strengthens the infrastructure supporting CIRO’s revised proficiency framework.
